Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge Eating or Over Eating
Eating Disorders are essentially mental disorders that are defined by unusual or abnormal habits of eating and they negatively affect an individuals mental health. The most common three are Binge Eating (Over Eating), where the person eats a large amount in a short period of time in order to supress other negative feelings, Anorexia Nervosa, where the person eats very little leading to low body weight and associated symptoms and finally, Bulimia Nervosa, where the person eats a lot and then attempts to rid themselves of the food. There are others and this is very simplified but these are the most common ones. Others include Pica, where people have an obsession with eating non-food items, Rumination Disorder, where people regurgitate food and Avoidant or Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, where people develop a lack of interest in food. As mentioned, although symptoms and the persons physical appearance point towards a physical illness, these are all essentially mental disorders and can be very over-whelming and frightening to the individuals affected by them.
The cause of Eating Disorders is unclear and vary from case to case. There is evidence of genetic, cultural and environmental factors as well as past trauma such as physical, sexual and mental abuse. Statistically, recovery rates from eating disorders are encouraging and a multi layered approach is needed in most cases as there is usually substance or other underlying issues involved. Eating Disorders can be effectively treated alongside addiction treatment and, as the two have similarities, once the behaviours are removed they often find they have a lot on common with addicts in treatment.
